the expedition

the expedition
On 5 June 1799, after a three-year period of preparation, Alexander von Humboldt embarked on his famous expedition. For three years he had been pondering deeply and discussing research goals, collecting research tools and practising how to use them – before he finally decided where to go. Dear St Pölten, You should know that for some time we have been planning to slow down travel, to taake a close look at the world again, to draw, to research, to discover . . . to go on an expedition. We have an idea and we hope, you will enjoy it as much as we do: just as Humboldt’s preparations took him to Austria for three years, we are moving the planning of our expedition to St Pölten. Here we want to make plans to rediscover the world. Together with you we want to find answers to large and small questions in distant worlds. Together with you we want to develop the love of adventure and the spirit of discovery. If you like our idea, in your market place in September 2009 we will solemnly found the "Society for the planning and execution of a world expedition starting from St Pölten". And three years later – 213 years after Humboldt – on 1 April 2012 – we will set out from St Pölten on one of the most important expeditions of the 21st century.
