With the opening of the St Pölten Festspielhaus on March 1, 1997, the capital of Lower Austria entered a new cultural era.
The building, designed by the architect Klaus Kada, represents the centre of a new cultural district including the Festspielhaus, the Bell Tower, the Provincial Academy, the Provincial Archive, the Provincial Library, the Provincial Museum and the regional studio of ORF (the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) as well as the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria.
The building’s unique architecture allows a wide range of events to be staged. All in all, four halls of varying sizes are available.
The Large Hall accommodates a total of 1,079 visitors. The conception of the hall with its excellent view and outstanding acoustics provides ideal conditions for dance, concerts, musical and spoken theatre. The many possible uses range from a proscenium-arch stage to an arena or a ballroom.
In addition to the Large Hall, the Box with 170 seats is the ideal venue for readings, discussions, dance or other intimate events.
Above and beyond this, two additional halls, the Rehearsal Stage 1 and the Rehearsal Stage 2, provide space for various events.
The ample foyers and the convenience offered by the park garage, with a direct staircase to the Festspielhaus, as well as the choice of elegant building materials are distinguishing features of the architecture.
