Grenade: Les 20 Ans

    We celebrate 20 years of the Groupe and Compagnie Grenade! Josette Baïz calls her two ensembles "Grenade", French for pomegranate – and grenade. Numerous small seeds full of light and explosive energy show that the troupe deserves its name. Founded in 1992, in the context of a cooperation of the dancer and choreographer Josette Baïz with young people from socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods in the cities of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, Groupe Grenade today has 50 members aged from seven to 18. Josette Baïz presents accomplished emerging dancers, all-round talents in all fields, from ballet to hip-hop, from comedy to contemporary dance techniques, each of them mastering all genres. For dancers who have outgrown the Groupe Grenade and want to make dance their profession, Josette Baïz founded the Compagnie Grenade, an ensemble of professional young dancers. Already in December 2010, they presented "Le Sacre" at St Pölten and enthralled the audience with their specific "Grenade style", characterised by energy, cultural crossover and cosmopolitanism. Baïz takes the 20th anniversary as an occasion to expand horizons again by bringing together children, young people and adult dancers of the Groupe and the Compagnie Grenade with eight internationally acclaimed choreographers and to merge them into a kaleidoscope of creativity. One of the pieces of this show will be developed by Jean-Christophe Maillot, artistic director of the Ballet de Monte Carlo, who says: "I feel respect for Josette Baïz and her Compagnie; I am happy and proud to have the chance to cooperate with her!"
