Season's opening
"When I play or if any of my compositions are performed, it is just as if the audience were all tables and chairs," said the young Mozart, describing the unbearable situation as a musician at the Salzburg court. Throughout his life he fought hard for his artistic autonomy and economic independence – though doomed to fail from the very beginning. Inspired by Mozart’s music, Joachim Schloemer takes a trip inside the soul. He designs the image of a human being marked by disappointments and crises, on a quest to a self-determined existence. Rarely heard arias, choral works and instrumental compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, played by the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria under the direction of Günther Albers, are interwoven with texts from letters written by the composer. One singer, one actress and one dancer act as the personified expressions of an artist’s personality torn between his striving for freedom and his yearning to be loved. Mozart’s song "Abendempfindung" (Evening Contemplation), which seems almost Romantic, reflects this mood. It serves as the pivotal point of the programme that allows the audience to experience many facets of the brilliant composer’s music as well as his personality.
