Nostalgia

"Io ti lascio, oh cara, addio, vivi più felice e scordati di me." – "I must leave you, beloved, farewell, live a happier life and forget me". This line from a concert aria by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is symbolic of the entire melancholy piece, which deals with leaving and being left, abstinence and loneliness, and the futility of love and life. This song of farewell is at the heart of "Nostalgia", with which Joachim Schloemer continues hisend-of-season examination of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - an exploration that began in September 2011 with "Evening Contemplation". In "Nostalgia" Schloemer creates a new piece of musical theatre infused with the sadness of this aria by weaving together choral pieces, arias and orchestral compositions by Mozart. Fragments of musical works, from short instrumental pieces to Mozart's most famous incomplete work, the original version of the Requiem, combine to create an aural symbol of the fragmentation of human existence.

Inspired by Jon Fosse's novel "Det er Ales" (This is Ales), Joachim Schloemer creates the image of a woman who waits for the return of her lover in a lonely house by the sea, unaware that he will not come. The wait brings forth nostalgic memories, and the ghosts of the past eventually claim her life. The fragment of Mozart's Requiem ends as quickly and unexpectedly as the protagonist's life, and yet something remains: the incomplete nature of the work leaves everything unfinished, in the same way that life invariably goes on after a death. The Tonkünstler Orchestra Niederösterreich, directed by the conductor Lutz Rademacher, the Philharmonia Chorus Vienna and exceptional soloists create a Mozart-infused world of melody. The orchestra, choir, a singer, an actress and two dancers combine on stage to create an impressive scenario.
