Nici Rutrecht was inspired to investigate the subject of remembering and forgetting in a dance context by thirty-year-old tapes of ballet music available to students of the local ballet school. When played today, the old sounds reawaken memories conserved deep within the protagonist, memories of a time long thought forgotten. "Two hours of happiness once a week. The same music, the same movements. Rings of age, written into the body." The emotions this creates provided the starting point for "Taped Version of Happiness", a piece by a dancer who, today, practices contemporary dance: something danced out of the physical system of movement long ago meets remnants stuck forever in the body memory.

"We are shaped by every event that occurs. They write themselves into the body, visibly or less visibly. What we experience alters our presence in the here and now and the potential future being. The body is constantly dealing with its experiences, internally and externally. Consciously and unconsciously. It is permanently exchanging information and communicating, providing information about us - often beyond our control. It attracts, repels and screams indefatigably for as long as we live." In her series of works "solo series", Anna Knapp investigates this thesis and searches for the traces left in the human body and the potential for the future which lies therein. This process is visualised through the medium of contemporary dance.

Liz King's work "Ikarus meets Newton" premiered at the Stadttheater Heidelberg in January 1991. Together with her company D.ID Dance Identity, she has now returned to the piece and adapted it. Seven dancers embark on a journey with an unforeseeable destination. Rising into an unknown sphere, they risk attacks of dizziness and a loss of balance. It is a heroic attempt to resist the conventional, defeat gravity and explore higher planes. Liz King challenges a new generation of contemporary dancers with this revised piece of choreography, combining elements of the present and the past.
Artistic direction Liz King. Dance Laura Amtmann, Pawel Dudus, Anna Possarnig, Alex Crozier Jackson, Andrea Handler, András Dobi, Celia Hickey
