"Wandering is the miller’s joy" – with the relatively simple plot of a young miller wandering through the countryside the wheel of history begins to turn and the story about a young miller and his unhappy love affair begins. That at the end of his journey the embodiment of a brook will sing him a lullaby, "a funeral sermon", as it is called in the epilogue by librettist Wilhelm Müller, not set to music, and the fact that no happy end waits for the young miller, becomes increasingly evident in the course of the 20 songs of the cycle. The German tenor Hans Jörg Mammel and the Dutch pianist Arthur Schoonderwoerd at the fortepiano embark on this journey through joy and grief set to ethereally beautiful music by Franz Schubert.
