He is a trombonist, a pianist, a composer and conductor. He is a jazz musician, a master of improvisation and also familiar with composed and New Music. The range of Christian Muthspiel’s artistic oeuvre in cooperation with countless international ensembles and artists encompasses everything from the small jazz band to the symphony orchestra, from solo performances to multimedia music theatre. The all-round musician has already been closely connected with the Festspielhaus St. Pölten for several years, a cooperation crowned at least for now with the composition "Pas de deux concertant". As artist in residence in the 2011/2012 season, Christian Muthspiel will be represented at the Festspielhaus with three projects, which could not be more different and therefore typical of him. With "Christian Muthspiel’s Yodel Group", he draws on the musical experiences of his childhood, translating the traditional yodels together with five international music colleagues into a contemporary jazz idiom. In the "Music & Literature" series, with "für und mit ernst" he enters into a dialogue with Ernst Jandl and becomes a solo performer, controlling a whole orchestra of instruments, voices and sounds and condensing it to a sparkling lively concentrate of his different musical languages. Finally, in "Mozart im Morgenland" (Mozart in the Orient) he stands on the rostrum as conductor, mediating between the musical worlds of the FisFüz oriental jazz ensemble and the Tonkünstler orchestra. Many genres meet on an equal footing, creating an inspiring highly charged atmosphere in three exceptional concerts.
