Classical music this season will mainly be dedicated to Beethoven and his outstanding achievements: the piano concerts No. 4 and 5 with the incomparable French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, the “Eroica” symphony with the leading original sound ensemble, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, piano sonatas with the multi-faceted Turkish pianist Fazil Say and fortepiano specialist Arthur Schoonderwoerd.
Beethoven also marks the dawn of Romanticism, of an era, in which composers expressed admiration for the classical in their music while at the same time superseding it. With Mendelssohn’s early piano concert, Schumann’s stroke of genius, his Second Symphony, and the cello concerto, three of these masterpieces are offered in our subscription package. Appearing as soloists are the brilliant Kristian Bezuidenhout, on the historically fitting fortepiano, and the Norwegian star cellist Truls Mørk. On Austrian National Day, the circle will close with Beethoven’s “Eroica” in the interpretation by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.
Solitaire music at Easter at the Festspielhaus: Bach’s St Matthew Passion in a production with the Collegium Vocale Gent and Philippe Herreweghe – interpreters who some years ago already have provided unforgettable musical hours with the Johannes Passion.
