* Richard Strauss Alpine Symphony op. 64

Classical Music With Music Director Yutaka Sado as its "mountain guide", the Tonkunstler Orchestra makes a grand Alpine ascent out of this too-quiet concert season. Richard Strauss’s last great orchestral composition is his most famous symphonic poem. A mountain tour inspired the 15-year-old Richard Strauss to produce his first sketches; it was only years later that he completed his Alpine Symphony. The work achieved fame not least because of its opulent orchestral arrangement. Its programme offers listeners plenty of room for associations – but brings with it the temptation of an overly naturalistic interpretation. With more than 100 musicians and instruments such as wind machine, thunder sheet and cowbells, the work is certainly imposing. Onwards to the summit!
