Dance/Vocal A group of South African singers took to sea by boat at the end of the 19th century in order to collect donations to build a school. Despite the tensions between South Africa and the colonial power Great Britain, the tour became a glorious success. 125 years later photographs of this “African Choir” have emerged that offer glimpses of how Africans were perceived in Victorian London. Using atmospheric sounds and both traditional Xhosa and contemporary styles of dance, Gregory Maqoma gives a voice to this remarkable story. This is a unique work about past and present issues concerning borders, migration and identity.
