Dance/Ballet Ruler, icon, hate figure, victim: Thierry Malandain examines one of the most glittering and controversial historical figures. In scene after scene of his neoclassical ballet he reveals the turbulent life of Marie Antoinette, who – away from all the pomp and splendour – emerges as a lonely, passionate and artistic woman. His ensemble dances with precision and sensitivity to music by Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Gluck, played live by the Tonkünstler Orchestra, and offers a sensual delight.
