Dance/Live Music Powerful dance with a political agenda: following his highly acclaimed piece Kirina, Serge Aimé Coulibaly’s latest creation Wakatt is a reflection on current events. In collaboration with the jazz flautist Magic Malik, his band and an ensemble of outstanding dancers from a range of African and European countries, the Belgian-Burkinese choreographer turns his attention to an omnipresent feeling: fear. What does it mean to live in a time when the “other” is synonymous with threat? Where will human beings’ natural instinct for survival lead them? Where do mechanisms of manipulation set off processes of self-destruction? At a time when walls between peoples are being raised, in which nationalism is defining itself through the rejection of others, when masks are being worn and distancing is being enforced, Wakatt is an urgent artistic appeal for resistance and openness – in the spirit of an accessible, shared future.
