* Joseph Haydn: The Seasons Oratorio for solos, mixed choir and orchestra Hob. XXI:3
Music/Classic/Vocal “Everyone sing! Let’s be joyful! Hurrah, Hurrah, Hurrah! Long live wine!”, carouses the choir in Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Seasons, a work of both majesty and folksiness. It’s sung by the Lower Austrian Concert Choir, here continuing its musical partnership with the Tonkunstler. The work celebrates the juice of the grape – for which Haydn has the orchestra imitate the hurdy gurdy, fiddle and bagpipes – but it also depicts all manner of other seasonal pleasures in varied musical techniques, sounds that can be immediately understood in line with Rousseau’s call for a return to nature. Together with Ivor Bolton at the podium and selected soloists, this promises to be an unforgettable musical experience.
