Dance/Flamenco/Live-Music  This ecstatic interpretation of ‘Carmen’ by José Montalvo is a lifeaffirming hymn to freedom and an ode to female emancipation. Who would Carmen be today? Every woman is the Spanish choreographer’s answer and he casts her mystic character in the plural. Based on motifs from Bizet and Mérimée, in ‘Carmen(s)’ he projects his heroine’s qualities onto a female ensemble. The dancers present Carmen as a charismatic, independent woman. Montalvo adds a light touch to this familiar dramatic material and also includes personal memories of his mother and grandmother. Between flamenco and hip-hop, classical opera and modern live music, and using Iranian bagpipes, Arabic and Andalusian sounds and Korean percussion José Montalvo’s vibrant work pays homage to the individual freedom of the loner.
