A fairytale journey… to an «ancient, wonderful land», in the words of Maurice Ravel’s little song cycle «Shéhérazade», that wonderland about which nannies once told stories to children! In two ways, this fantastic programme paints a fascinating picture book of fairytales, myths and legends, with Tonkunstler Music Director Fabien Gabel complementing Gustav Mahler’s fin-de-siècle mood with French Impressionism. The eerie early cantata «Das klagende Lied», in which the barely 20-year-old Mahler’s tonal language has already matured to a simply incredible extent, meets Ravel’s Eastern-inspired magic and subtly opulent sounds from Claude Debussy’s opera «Pelléas et Mélisande».
PROGRAMME
*Claude Debussy: «Pelléas et Mélisande» concert suite (arrangement: Alain Altinoglu)
*Maurice Ravel: «Shéhérazade» for soprano solo and orchestra
*Gustav Mahler: «Das klagende Lied» for soloists, mixed choir and orchestra (1899 version in 2 movements)
