Federspiel

With the precision of chamber music, Federspiel weaves together Alpine folklore, jazz and world music. Two years ago, this brilliant wind ensemble celebrated its 20th anniversary; now, under the title Wir & Jetzt (‘We & Now’), it turns its attention to the central themes of our time.

A programme serving as a musical appeal for responsibility and peaceful coexistence: for Federspiel, ‘Wir’ stands for solidarity – from the smallest community to wider society. It encompasses the knowledge and experiences of all the generations that came before us. ‘Jetzt’, in turn, stands for precise timing and the irreplaceable magic of the moment. What begins as a philosophical treatise turns out to be a playground of virtuosity for the septet: together with special guest Vivi Vassileva on drums, the musicians make full use of the sonic possibilities of their brass and woodwind instruments and take the audience on a journey ranging from touching moments to rousing cascades of sound.

Federspiel was founded in 2004 and attracted widespread attention with their debut albums Federspiel (2010) and Unerhört Bumm! (2012). This was followed by tours across Europe, Canada, the USA and North Africa, further acclaimed albums and an Austrian World Music Award. Vivi Vassileva is one of the most influential percussionists of her generation and is celebrated for her technical brilliance, her physical presence and her innovative approach to percussion and striking instruments.
